Affordable residential housing is an essential requirement for every household in both developed and developing nations.  Although governments have an indispensable role in addressing the housing challenges faced by their citizens and residents, it is the private sector that is involved in the design and provision of affordable residential housing, often at market prices and costs with governments content with the formulation of housing policies and regulation of the market. Local residential housing solutions are aimed at addressing this need and providing guidance on crafting effective local housing strategies to enable access to effective residential solutions with competitive prices and housing costs.  Affordable residential housing is important for community development.  The United Nations defines community development as “a process where community members come together to take collective action and generate solutions to common problems.”  Community is a concept characterized by the practices—collaborative arrangements among civic leaders, activists, citizens, and professionals—designed to improve various aspects of communities—physical, social, economic, and institutional infrastructure—in preparation and anticipation of building stronger and self-sustaining local communities.  Several approaches to community development are predicated on a few characteristic properties: participation, transparency, barrier removal, accountability, local power, and enhanced capacity.
